There probably won’t be a full-on US tour til next year. Joel has two kids now, I have a have a son, our bass player just had his first kid just about a week ago and our drummer has a son, too. Benji’s really the only one who doesn’t have a family, so it’s easy for him to be 100 percent Good Charlotte, all the time. Out of those 100 of songs, I’d say Benji wrote about 80 of them by himself. The bulk of the record was written by Benji and a good handful came from Joel.

After all, the revelation of his My Chemical Romance fan status came just weeks after he released a track called “Emotions.” What’s better is that the song was co-produced by an icon of the 2000s emo era. Watch the full chat with Good Charlotte's Billy Martin below and if you want to pick up a guitar and start playing just like Billy, head over to Sweetwater.com for all your gear needs. We came across Dean because we're friends with John Feldmann from Goldfinger who knew him. John kept saying if we ever needed a drummer to give him a call. As everybody knows, we had a lot of drummer problems so it hasn't been easy for us.

When Dean came in, he took all the stress off us. Having someone we knew come in and do it without questioning us, was a godsend. We've had drummers before where we've gone into the studio and they've started wining about the drums or whatever and that is the last thing you really want to hear. Maryland natives Good Charlotte return to the spotlight with their soon to be released fourth studio outing titled Good Morning Revival.

You’re pushing out on your boundaries, stylistically. MADDEN All of this subject matter is stuff we’ve dealt with in our childhoods, our youth or our adult life. And we felt a lot of these conversations needed to be normalized, so that someone could turn to their friend and go, “Yeah, I struggle with depression,” and not have that be an uncomfortable conversation.
But there was no going on the internet and watching a live band in the studio. Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and all that stuff just wasn’t around. It seems pointless not to use it, it’s there, kids love it, and it’s really easy to use. It helps us maintain that fan-band relationship when you’re not on tour and not out there doing things. Our first record was really simple, simple melodies and simple hooks. The second record we started with more textures and sounds.

I think Silverchair gave me the idea to really want to be in a band, but Id say the first time it really hit me was when that kid came into school and played guitar in the class. MADDEN Well, when we came out, it was ’98, ’99, and music at that time felt very manufactured. To me, the music that felt the realest was what the punk bands were doing, and so that was what we gravitated toward. I think our instincts were that we could only relate to shit where it felt like the person singing it had lived it. So we started playing with all the punk bands and the pop-punk bands because that was where we felt comfortable. I think we had a lot of that spirit and shared some similar core values, but at the same time I was inspired by, you know, Cash Money and everything that was going on in that rap scene.
There is a lot of keyboards on this record than our previous effort. On the last record, we experimented a bit with keyboards and found that everybody was really into it. So this time around when I was thinking of a song or a part to come up with, where I'd normally do it on the guitar, I'd go and do it on keyboards. It was cool to have a choice like that this time because I knew we were going to make a more electronic sounding record. On September 25, 2020, Billy Martin did a guitar play through livestream on the 20th anniversary of the band's debut album. On December 18, 2020, after a week of previous teasing, Good Charlotte released a single called "Last December", which was the band's first new music in two years.

By 2000, Good Charlotte had landed a deal with Epic records and scored its first hit with Little Things, which swiftly grew into an anthem among high school kids. However, the tune had already been gaining momentum long before the band was signed as a demo version made its way across East Coast local radio stations and began creating a buzz. Good Charlotte later expanded its audience through relentless touring and appearances on MTV. I definitely try to keep up on that and learn about it, cause we’re definitely not like the new school young bands that grew up on there. A lot of bands have built their careers on the internet before even going on tour.
The collabs underlie each track with catchy, pop sensibilities—a marked diversion from Heaps’ generally melancholic tone but not one that should be underappreciated. After Good Charlotte finished touring its fifth album in 2011, the band decided to take a break. Billy recognized the opportunity sitting right in front of him. Catching up with him ahead of his headline set at this year’s Slam Dunk Festival, Billy reveals how he began slowly taking over the comic book world. If you grew up in the ‘90s, chances are you know the band Good Charlotte.
For Generation Rx, they’ve partnered with BMG – their first major label release in eight years. Guitar.com met with Good Charlottes guitarist Billy Martin at the tail end of the groups marathon tour supporting The Young And The Hopeless. Though he was evidently tired from the endless trek spanning the globe, Martin was quite eager to talk shop.
Next year we’re going to Europe in January/February. I think we’re hoping to do the Christmas radio shows around America, the radio stations do their Jingle Bash or whatever they call them. We’re hoping to do a handful of those around the holidays.
And I didn't really care what anybody says about us, I'm so used to it and so over it. But it's a good thing to be controversial like that because if you're falling between the cracks and people aren't talking about you that means you're not doing something right. But if you're the most loved and most hated band at the same time, then you're obviously doing something right. Yes, for me I'm usually the icing on the cake where I get to do the ear candy kind of guitar stuff where I'd play like the lead or the melody or all the other parts. This time because I also played keyboards, something I also do live, it saw me switching between keyboards and guitar.
Nowadays, it’s a little different, but it’s nice. I can sit at home from my office on the computer, go on the internet, kids two seconds later read what I wrote and they’re writing back. It’s definitely important and it’s something that we’ve really had to adapt to and stay up on.
I have a comic book that I co-wrote with a friend of mine that I’m drawing as well, that we’re shooting to put out next year. If the opportunity comes up to do more stuff for the band, I certainly will. I still do t-shirt designs for the band once in awhile. It (designing the third album) was a great door-opener for me to get to do more art projects. Like the first song on the record, “Let The Music Play,” is definitely a special song.
One time we had to do a Spanish project in middle school. Everybody did some kind of poster, but one kid asked if he could write a song for it. The teacher said he could, so he came in and played his guitar in the class and started yelling stuff like tacos and burritos over the top of the guitar chords. Then the teacher said that as long as he brought the guitar in, he might as well play for a little bit. So we were asking him to play Nirvana, and the kid would play Nirvana. I thought it was so cool that this kid could play these other bands songs.
